Bicycle Safety and Reflectors

It’s very important to put a safety reflector on your bike if you are riding at night.  It’s important to put a nighttime reflector on your bike because cars can see you while you’re on your bike.  To be safe, you have to be able to be seen at night.  If you can’t be seen, then a car can hit you, and you can get severely injured, or even killed.  Even if you are wearing light colored clothes at night while you are biking, you should still put a reflector on your bike.  You don’t even need to use multiple ones!  You can increase the chance of staying safe by just putting one reflector on the front of your bike!

Most bicycle companies have their customer's best interest in mind.  Most bikes come with reflectors on them already; one in the front, and one on each tire.  You can increase your chance of safety by adding additional  route reflectors, just to stay on the safe side.  In addition to putting reflectors on your bike, you should put them on you and your belongings too.  There are many fun and stylish ways to sport reflectors.  You can put them on your clothing, zippers, shoes, and even hats!  You can also put a safety reflector key chain on your purse or backpack.  You can even make your own custom reflectors!  You should put reflectors on yourself because if the reflectors on your bike falls of while you are riding, you can still stay safe by having them on your clothes.  Safety reflectors for clothing maybe your only option if you can't attach one to your bike.

If you are riding in the early morning or dusk, it’s still kind of dark out.  You should wear reflectors in these hours because, you still want to be seen.  It’s better to do as much as you can to prevent a dangerous situation where you can get very hurt.  Even though it may seem like a little bit much to be be wearing reflectors at dawn and dusk, it’s really not.  Safety is always your top priority.  If your friends are biking with you, make sure they have reflectors on their bikes and clothes as well.
Maybe you could even talk to your principal or school president about hosting a bike safety night for your community.  You could pass out bike reflectors and give some information about how to be safe at night using safety reflectors.

The Reflectory has been selected by Safe Kids Worldwide to create a line of colorful, high intensity reflectors and make them available to organizations interested in promoting visibility in the dark. Reflectors help make you more visible in the dark, so a motorist can take the necessary precautions to avoid hitting you. Wear a reflector every time you go outdoors at dawn, dusk or in the dark. Choose from the many reflectors shown here to help you and your family become more visible in the dark!
